eduroam at Wake Forest: Frequently asked questions

Modified on: Thu, Jul 13, 2023 4:42 PM

Eduroam is our new preferred wireless network at Wake Forest University. Connect using your full username@wfu.edu email address and password, and enjoy secure access when you visit any of over 10,000 partner campuses in the eduroam worldwide consortium.

Is eduroam still a Wake Forest network?

Yes, eduroam runs using our own secure and robust Wake Forest University network. Because of some requirements for how we must configure eduroam, we cannot add Wake Forest University branding to the network name. However, it is indeed our own robust and secure campus network that we use for our other network names/experiences (WFUGuest, WFUMydevices, WFUWireless-Legacy).

Why should I join eduroam instead of guest or other networks on campus?

Eduroam is up to 16 times faster than other options on campus, is secure, and offers access to wireless printing, library journal databases, and other campus resources. Also, as long as you connect on campus using your full Wake Forest email address (username@wfu.edu) and password, you'll enjoy seamless access at thousands of eduroam partner sites you happen to visit.

Is there a how-to article that has more details on connecting? I am trying to join eduroam but have questions on some of the steps.

Please see how-to steps for joining eduroam on your devices in our eduroam solution article.

Where else can I connect to eduroam?

More than 10,000 eduroam hotspots are available at universities, research centers, academies, many schools, and other research and education institutions in more than 100 territories around the world. As eduroam grows, more and more hotspots are appearing in additional places such as libraries, museums and public spaces such as railway stations and coffee shops. Wherever you see 'eduroam' appear in your list of Wi-Fi networks, you can get online.

Some of my devices still connect to WFUWireless. How long do I have to make the switch to eduroam?

We hope to make the complete transition to eduroam by the end of 2023. Until then, existing connections will remain uninterrupted.

By joining eduroam, does my account data remain secure even when I join it on another school campus?

When you join eduroam on your devices, the experience is secure and private to our own Wake Forest authentication platforms. eduroam's secure and privacy-preserving technology means that there is no need to enter usernames and passwords through insecure web browser forms. As you visit eduroam partner sites, your device will identify a valid eduroam access point and log-in automatically. Your password is never shared with any of the access points.
