This article provides end-to-end instructions for using AI features powered by Gemini in Google Meet. It outlines how to automate meeting notes, catch up on active discussions in real time, apply speech and caption translations, optimize studio-quality audio and video, and streamline slide presentations. Step-by-step procedures are provided for each capability to help teams maximize collaboration, overcome language barriers, and eliminate manual meeting follow-ups across Google Workspace.

Ask Gemini in Meet

Need a quick update? Ask Gemini to summarize ongoing discussions or provide a recap of what someone said. It can help improve meeting outcomes by identifying key takeaways, decisions, and action items, and lets you quickly catch up on what you missed if you joined late.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Join your Google Meet call.
  2. Click the Ask Geminiicon in the lower left corner of the Meet Screen.
    • Ask Gemini icon location in Google Meet
  3. Click the default "Summarize the discussion so far" button to instantly generate a recap of recent discussions, or type a custom question into the prompt box.
  4. Review the generated response in the side panel to review key takeaways, decisions, or missed details.
Take notes for me (virtual & in-person)

Automatically capture summaries, decisions, and tasks. You can even use this feature to capture notes for in-person meetings. When notes are taken, Gemini can now automatically capture visual screenshots of presented content (like slides or charts) directly into the notes document (presenters receive a notification and can disable this from the notes panel).

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Join the meeting on a laptop or room device.
  2. Click the Gemini AI note-taking feature icon (pencil with sparkle) in the top-right meeting header.
    • Gemini AI note-taking feature icon in Google Meet header
  3. Select "Start taking notes"
  4. Conduct the meeting while Gemini automatically captures summaries, decisions, and tasks in the background.
  5. For Presenters: When presenting slides or charts, Gemini automatically embeds visual screenshots into the notes. To disable this during a presentation, open the Notes side panel and toggle off Capture visuals from presentation.
Deep Workspace integration

Gemini meeting notes are deeply integrated with Google Workspace. Generated notes are automatically saved to your Google Drive and attached directly to the Google Calendar invite for easy access by internal attendees.

Note:

External invitees will not have automatic access to these notes.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. End the meeting. Gemini will automatically compile and format the document.
  2. Access the notes by opening the meeting event in Google Calendar and clicking the attached Google Doc, or navigate to Google Drive > Google Meet > Your Meeting.
  3. To Share with External Guests: Open the generated document in Google Drive, click Share, and explicitly grant view/edit access to external email addresses.
Intelligent co-presenter suggestions

When presenting Google Slides in Meet, Gemini intelligently detects trigger phrases in the chat or audio—like "Can you please add me as a co-presenter?" or "Next slide please." It then suggests adding that participant as a co-presenter in the Ask Gemini panel, allowing you to grant them control with one click.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Present a Google Slides deck directly within Google Meet.
  2. When a participant uses a trigger phrase in chat or voice (e.g., "Can you add me as a co-presenter?"), Gemini will generate an automated prompt.
  3. Click Add as co-presenter directly on the pop-up notification banner on screen or within the Ask Gemini side panel.
  4. The participant will instantly gain slide control access.
Adaptive audio

No more echo and feedback when multiple people join a Meet call from the same room. Adaptive audio automatically merges microphones and speakers from multiple laptops, creating a unified audio system without needing dedicated conferencing hardware.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Join the meeting from individual laptops inside the same physical room.
  2. Accept the automatic Adaptive Audio detected prompt that appears on screen upon joining.
  3. Alternatively, manually enable it by navigating to More Options (three dots) > Settings > Audio and turning on Adaptive Audio.

  4. Speak naturally without muting/unmuting; Meet dynamically manages microphone inputs and speaker outputs across all devices to prevent echo.
Real-time speech translation

Break down language barriers instantly. Speak naturally and Google Meet will create a near-real-time dubbed audio translation for other participants that even preserves your original tone and speaking cadence.

Note:

Currently supports bidirectional translation between English and Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Click Waffle menu in the lower right corner of the screen
    • (Waffle menu)Waffle menu icon location in Google Meet
  2. Select the Tools tab from the menu.
  3. Select Speech translation and click Enable translation for everyone.
  4. Speak naturally; other participants will hear translated audio dubbing in their configured target language.
Live translated captions

For wider language support without audio dubbing, access real-time translated captions to help cross-lingual teams collaborate seamlessly.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Click More Options (three dots) > Settings > Captions.
    • (More Options location) More Options three dots menu location in Google Meet settings
  2. Toggle Translated Captions to ON.
  3. Select your target output language to display translated text captions on screen in real time.
Studio look and sound

Look and sound your best in any environment. Gemini enhances your camera feed in low light and restores original audio clarity by balancing frequencies and reducing background noise.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. For Studio Look: Click More Options (three dots) > Background and effects, select the Appearance tab, and toggle on Studio look.
  2. For Studio Sound: Open Settings > Audio, locate Studio sound, and switch the toggle to ON(this feature operates as a standard enable/disable toggle without manual adjustment sliders).
