What to do if Your Email is Part of a Data Breach

Modified on: Fri, Feb 27, 2026 4:42 PM

If you suspect your email address has been exposed in a data breach, you're not alone — and there are straightforward steps you can take to protect yourself. The WFU Information Security team is here to help guide you through the process.

Find out if your email has been compromised

Start by visiting Have I Been Pwned, a free, reputable tool that allows you to search your email against public data breaches. If your email appears in a data breach, or if you receive an alert about a breach, change your password right away. Your WFU account already has two-step verification to strengthen its security, but changing the password is an important layer of protection.

You may need to update other passwords

If you have used the compromised password on other accounts, those may also be at risk. You’ll want to change those passwords as soon as possible, and make sure in the future to use unique passwords for services.

Set up a passkey for your WFU account

Passkeys are extremely phishing resistant, and it is strongly recommended that you set one up for your WFU account. A passkey is like a digital key associated with your account that uses your Face ID, Touch ID, or PIN number as second factor authentication. This security step makes it very difficult for bad actors to gain access even if your password is ever exposed.

Please remember not to use your WFU email account for personal use. That can put your university account and other WFU data at risk.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected] to consult with a member of the WFU Information Security team.
