Recommended Windows Wireless Configuration for eduroam

To ensure the best possible experience when connecting your Windows laptop to WFU wireless via eduroam, please follow these steps:

Update Wireless Driver

  • Download the latest Intel Wireless Driver
    • Verify that the "Version" is selected as the "(Latest)" version number.
    • Click the "Download" blue button.
    • Locate the downloaded file and double-click to install. Follow the steps to fully upgrade your wireless driver. 
    • Note: installing this update will disconnect your WiFi connection for approximately 10 seconds. 

Set eduroam to User Authentciation

  • Open the Windows Menu and search for the Control Panel. Click to open.
  • Click Network and Sharing Center.
  • Under Connection click on Wi-Fi (eduroam).
  • Click on Wireless Properties.
  • Click on the Security tab at the top.
  • Click on Advanced settings.
  • Under Specify authentication mode, change to User authentication.
  • Click OK to close all the windows. 
  • You will be prompted to reconnect to eduroam and enter your WFU email address and password. 
    • Be sure to enter your complete @wfu.edu email address for the username.

Ensure Windows is Updated

  • Check to see if you have any available updates from Microsoft for the Windows OS. 
    • Open Settings from the Windows/Start Menu.
    • Click on Windows Update from the list on the left side. 
    • Most times, it will automatically start a search for available updates. If not, click Check for updates. 
    • Install any available updates that may appear. 

Optional - Settings that can improve your WiFi experience on campus

  • Open the Windows/Start Menu and search for "Device Manager" and open.
  • Once Device Manager is opened, scroll and find Network adapters. 
  • Locate the installed Intel Wi-Fi adapter -- example of what it may look like:

  • Right-click on the adapter and click Properties
  • Click to open Advanced
  • Change the following settings:
    • MIMO Power Save Mode > set to "No SMPS"
    • Preferred Band > set to “Prefer 5GHz band”
    • Roaming Aggressiveness > set to “4. Medium-High”
