How to Update Your Gmail Password in the Mail App (macOS & iOS)

If you have recently changed your Gmail password, you will need to update the Mail app on your Mac or iPhone.

For macOS

Step 1

  • Open System Settings
  • Click the Apple menu  and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  • Click Internet Accounts.
  • Select your Gmail account.

Step 2

  • Re-authenticate Your Account
  • If your password has changed, you'll likely see a message saying, "Account needs attention" or similar.
  • Click Re-enter Password or Sign in.
  • A Google sign-in window will appear—enter your new Gmail password and follow the prompts to allow Mail access.
  • Once signed in, close the settings window.

Step 3

  • Restart Mail App
  • Quit the Mail app and reopen it.
  • Check if your Gmail is syncing properly.

For iOS (iPhone & iPad)

Step 1

  • Open Mail Account Settings
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap Mail.
  • Tap Accounts.
  • Select your Gmail account.

Step 2

  • Sign Back Into Gmail
  • If prompted, tap Re-enter Password or Sign In.
  • A Google login page will open—enter your new Gmail password and follow the prompts.
  • Allow access if required.
  • Tap Done to save changes.

Step 3

  • Restart Mail App
  • Close the Mail app and reopen it.
  • Check if Gmail is syncing properly.

Troubleshooting

 Still Not Working? Remove & Re-Add Gmail

  • Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  • Select your Gmail account and tap Delete Account.
  • Tap Add Account, choose Google, and sign in with your new password.
