Do you need to run Windows on your Mac?

Modified on: Wed, Aug 7, 2024 8:55 AM

What are the options?

There are certain programs that are only available to be installed on the Windows operating system. If you are a Mac user and this needs arises, Information Systems has two options available to you:

  • Parallels
      • Parallels provides the ability to have a virtual Windows desktop that is stored locally on your Mac's hard drive. You can use Windows-based applications like any other application on your Mac. This allows for a seamless integration. This uses your Mac's hardware resources (processor, RAM, and storage).
      • Request a Parallels license
      • Parallels installation instructions
      • **Please note: if needing to run PowerFAIDS, an Azure Virtual Desktop is required.
  • Azure Virtual Desktop
      • Azure Virtual Desktop provides the ability to have a virtual Windows desktop that is hosted on the WFU-managed Azure cloud. You will log into the cloud hosted virtual desktop through a Microsoft Remote Desktop application on your Mac. This uses very little of your Mac's hardware resources, mainly using your internet connection.
      • Request an Azure Virtual Desktop
      • Instructions will be sent to you once it is available.

Which is the right choice for me?

  • If you need this Windows desktop as a long-term solution or will need to access the Windows application without an internet connection, Parallels is the one for you.
  • If you need this Windows desktop for a short-term solution (per semester use, project work, etc.), an Azure Virtual Desktop is the one of you.

If you, or your department, are looking for the best solution for a long-term solution that involves greater hardware solutions or a consistent experience, please reach out to Information Systems.
