Google Workspace standalone apps for Desktop

Modified on: Sun, Sep 1, 2024 7:43 AM

The Chrome browser allows you to create a standalone app for any website you would like. This is particularly useful when it comes to the Google Workspace apps. If you are someone that would prefer to use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Chat, Google Meet, etc. in its own app, follow these steps!

  • Navigate to the site of your choice -- mail.google.com for example.
  • Click on the three-dot menu within Chrome (1), click Save and Share (2), and then click Create Shortcut...(3)

  • Edit the name of the app if you choose to do so, click the Open as window, and click Create.

With some apps, the use of a Progressive Web App (PWA) is already built into the site, Google Chat for example. In this case, you only have to click the Install app button.

Once you have the app installed, you will be able to pin it to your dock/taskbar for quick access and independent use.
