Microsoft periodically retires older versions of their Windows operating systems to focus developer efforts on more current versions of the OS. Within each major release (e.g. Windows 10, Windows 11), there are incremental “feature builds” which serve to maintain device features and security. Microsoft regularly announces “end of servicing” for older builds, typically at a time frame of two to three years after the initial release. Because of this, Information Systems releases periodic feature updates so that all Wake Forest devices remain secure and fully operational.
Monthly “quality updates” for security and functionality
Wake Forest IS releases monthly "quality updates" that include mandatory security patching and functionality improvements for your Windows device.
Semi-annual OS Feature Updates
Less frequently, IS releases larger Windows feature updates to eligible devices. The installation of a feature update occurs in two steps. The first portion of the process occurs in the background, as the update is downloaded and assembled. The second portion consists of at least one reboot (sometimes 2-3). The total reboot duration will vary, from 10 to 60 minutes, depending on your computer's particular age or specifications. Because of these two differences (added time and device reboot), IS takes the following two precautions:
- Information Systems schedules larger feature updates during our summer and winter breaks, so devices receive them during less demanding times of the academic year.
- In the instance a device receives a feature update, the individual is notified when a reboot is required, and additionally, the user will have an option to delay the reboot for up to nine (9) hours so that it occurs in a time that is less impactful for one’s individual schedule.
Known issue:
Information Systems recommends staying signed in and synching one's Google Chrome profile(s). After a Windows feature update reboot, it may be necessary to sign back into your profile in order for Chrome data (user data, bookmarks) to re-appear.
