What does central computer management mean?
Centrally managing computers means Information Systems can securely update, monitor, and backup your device. Wake Forest University computers issued to Faculty and Staff are centrally managed to ensure robust data protection and seamless technical support.
What are the key components of central management?
Centrally managed devices run a suite of security and productivity tools in the background:
- Antivirus (Cisco Secure Endpoint): Keeps your computer safe from viruses, ransomware, and other malware in real-time.
- Data Backup (CrashPlan): Once activated, this tool automatically backs up your data every 15 minutes when connected to the internet. Data is encrypted twice for maximum security and easy recovery.
- Encryption: Crucial for keeping data secure if your device is lost or stolen. Windows devices utilize BitLocker, while Mac users utilize FileVault.
-
Network Security (VPN & Umbrella):
- VPN: Securely connects you to the campus network when working remotely to access restricted university services.
- Cisco Umbrella: Prevents you from inadvertently visiting known malicious or infected websites.
Along with these security features, all centrally managed computers come pre-installed with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, Excel, OneDrive, etc.). You can find these by searching your device's applications.
How do I know if my computer is centrally managed?
You can easily verify if your university device is centrally managed by checking for specific software:
On a Mac:
- Open Spotlight Search (Cmd + Spacebar).
- Search for Self Service.
- If the Self Service application is installed, your Mac is centrally managed.
On a Windows Device:
- Open the Start Menu and search for Control Panel.
- Set the "View by" option in the top right corner to Large icons or Small icons.
- Look for Configuration Manager. If it is listed, your computer is centrally managed.
Note: If you are a faculty or staff member and believe your WFU-issued device is missing these components, please contact the IS Service Desk for assistance.
