What does central computer management mean?

Centrally managing computers means Information Systems can secure and backup your device. Wake Forest University computers that are issued to Faculty and Staff are centrally managed.

What are key components of central management?

Antivirus

  • Antivirus keeps your computer safe from viruses and other malware.
  • All centrally managed computers have Cisco Secure Endpoint.
Code42 (Crashplan)
  • Once activated, Code42 (CrashPlan) automatically backs up your data every 15 minutes when connected to the internet for easy recovery in the event of a computer failure.
  • Data is encrypted twice to ensure security.
Encryption
  • Encryption is important for keeping data secure.
  • Wake Forest uses Bitlocker for Windows, and users with Macs should make sure FileVault is enabled on their device.
VPN / Umbrella
  • VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. VPN should be used when you are remote and need to access services that are only available on the campus network.
  • Umbrella protects users from visiting known malicious/infected websites.

Along with the above key components related to backing up and securing your device, all centrally managed computers also come with the Office 365 Suite, which includes familiar programs such as Word, Excel, One Drive, etc. You can search in your programs to see if you have the Office Suite.

How do I know if my computer is centrally managed?

To check if your computer is centrally managed:
  • On a Mac: Search for “Self Service” on your Mac. If you have Self Service on your device, then your computer is centrally managed.
  • On a Windows: Go to your Control Panel. If you don’t know where to find Control Panel, search for it in the Start Menu. Once in your Control Panel, if you have Configuration Manager listed, then your computer is centrally managed.
