Encryption on University-Managed Computers

Modified on: Wed, May 12, 2021 3:13 PM

The University manages encryption with Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) on University desktop computers and laptop computers used by faculty and staff. MBAM protects sensitive computer data in the event that a computer is lost or stolen and improves compliance with FERPA and other security best practices.

A key benefit of MBAM is the ability to use the Self Service Console to retrieve a recovery key without a call to the Service Desk. The Self Service Console may be used by all users who have computers managed with MBAM. The recovery key will be requested during the boot-up process if the computer detects some type of change to its “normal condition”.  An example of when you may see this message is if the hard drive is put into a different computer.

Apple products, Mac computers and iPads, are encrypted using the operating system's built-in FileVault encryption. FileVault is enabled when a Mac or iPad are managed.
