Who can buy a WakeWare laptop?

Anyone affiliated with the university, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni can purchase a laptop through the WakeWare program. Active undergraduate and graduate students are not limited to one computer, but certain restrictions may apply. Incoming undergraduate students eligible to receive Financial Aid Technology Grants can only redeem the grant once to purchase a WakeWare computer.

When can new students purchase?

We encourage you to wait until later in the summer to purchase your WakeWare laptop to ensure you have the newest technology and access to vendor’s back to school promotions. However, if you find yourself in need of a new laptop sooner, please contact the WakeWare Program Manager. Purchasing is open all year long.

Vendors are known to announce new products or promotions in mid-Summer. If taking advantage of these promotions is important to you, we encourage you to wait until later in July to purchase your laptop.

When will I receive my laptop?

Generally, the computer will arrive in about two weeks from the purchase date, but allow three weeks for delivery. Wake Forest cannot guarantee any specific delivery times and cannot expedite shipping. Orders placed within 3 weeks of your campus move-in date should be shipped to campus and picked up at the bookstore when you arrive.

Please note that when selecting expedited shipping online during checkout there may still be delays if inventory is unavailable.

Contact the Wake Forest Technology Department Manager at (336) 758-4154 to check the status of your purchase.

What if I elect not to purchase a WakeWare laptop and to bring my own device (BYOD)?

While we can assist in testing your device, we cannot ensure that it will meet all the compatibility requirements with the academic software as well as the multimedia and AV devices in the classrooms. To learn more about the limitations of support for BYODs visit the BYOD Requirements article

Can I still bring my iPad?

Yes, and it will work on the campus network as a companion device. You will need your laptop for most academic software.

Can I upgrade my laptop?

Each year laptops will be available with different configuration options. Because the laptops are specially configured for Wake Forest, there are no other options for upgrades, accessories or changes to the WakeWare program models unless they are explicitly listed on the program website.

Does Wake Forest have computer labs?

There are no general computer labs on our campus. The Wake Forest commitment to academic technology is based on interactive engagement anywhere and anytime. There are a few academic departments that have small computer labs for very specialized software that is either too expensive or too robust to run on consumer laptops. These labs are available only for those students taking a class requiring the use of this specialized software.

How does purchasing work for transfer students?

Transfer students have the same requirements for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and access to the WakeWare program. Transfer students may be eligible for a Technology Grant if entering as a first or second year student and receiving institutional aid. The WakeWare Program Manager will reach out to you via your Wake Forest email, if eligible.

Can I trade my WakeWare laptop in for a new one?

The bookstore does offer a trade-in program, but only accepts Apple laptops. For more information visit the bookstore or contact them at (336) 758-4154.

How do I get power cords, cases, and other accessories?

The bookstore, located in Taylor Hall on Hearn Plaza, has a large selection of accessories in their Technology Department. You are also able to purchase accessories online.

Financial Aid

How do I pay for my WakeWare laptop?

Purchases can be paid for with major credit cards or with a Technology Grant both in store and online. Instructions on how to redeem your Technology Grant are sent to your Wake Forest email in mid-May or whenever you become eligible.

Who is eligible for a WFU Technology Grant?

Technology Grants are awarded to any incoming first-year or second-year student who receives need-based, merit, or athletic scholarship funds from Wake Forest. Students have until the end of their sophomore year to become eligible and redeem their grant.

You will be notified of your eligibility to receive a Technology Grant from the WakeWare Program Manager in May, or whenever you become eligible.

What does the Technology Grant cover?

The Technology Grant covers the cost of the standard WakeWare laptop model, plus four years of warranty and accidental damage protection, along with Winston Salem sales tax. If you qualify for the Technology Grant, you can choose any of the WakeWare program models, but you will be responsible for paying the difference between the Technology Grant value and the upgraded model.

Support

Which warranty does my laptop have?

WakeWare laptops purchased between May 2016 and April 2017:

  • Apple laptops are covered with three years of AppleCare. There is no Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) included in AppleCare.
  • Dell laptops are covered with four years of Dell ProSupport and Complete Care, which includes Accidental Damage Protection (ADP).

WakeWare laptops purchased between May 2017 and May 2018:

  • Apple and Dell laptops are covered with four years of Safeware insurance, including Accidental Damage Protection (ADP).

WakeWare laptops purchased in June of 2018 and beyond:

  • Apples laptops are covered with four years of SafeWare insurance, including Accidental Damage Protection (ADP).
  • Dells laptops are covered with four years of Dell ProSupport and Complete Care, including Accidental Damage Protection (ADP).

What is Dell ProSupport and Complete Care?

Dell ProSupport and Complete Care is Dell’s premier support and warranty service.

Available for four years, it includes extended warranty and Accidental Damage Protection (ADP). Accidental damage includes drops, spills, cracked screens, and other scenarios of user damage. Coverage is limited to one accidental damage incident per year of coverage (four incidents total). Our Tech Shop is certified to repair your laptop. Claims can be filed with Dell directly if you are away from campus.

What does Dell ProSupport and Complete Care cover?

Dell ProSupport and Complete Care covers:

  • Liquid spills on or in the laptop
  • Drops, falls, and other collisions
  • Electrical surge
  • Damaged or broken LCD due to a drop or fall

What does Dell ProSupport and Complete Care NOT Cover?

  • Software and virus issues are not covered.
  • Liquid damage and collisions in the event of a natural disaster, such as a flood or earthquake.
  • Intentional damage, such as neglect, misuse, and theft are not covered.

For more information, visit this information regarding ProSupport and Complete Care.

What is Safeware?

Safeware is a leading provider of product protection and extended warranty solutions.

Safeware has a “Limit of Liability,” meaning your laptop is only covered for four years or until the cost of repairs exceeds the total cost of the laptop. For example, if you purchase a $2000 laptop with 4 years of Safeware insurance and require $600 of repairs, you have $1400 of Safeware coverage remaining during the four year term of coverage.

You are able to purchase Safeware again if you meet this Limit of Liability, pending a review from a Safeware certified technician (available at our on-campus Service Desk).

Beginning in the Spring of 2019, Safeware includes one year of theft protection.

What is the difference between Safeware and AppleCare+?

For a similar cost, Safeware covers your laptop for four years, while AppleCare+ is only for three years. AppleCare+ also has deductibles ranging from $100 – $300 and you are only limited to two accidental damage incidents. With Safeware, there are no deductibles and there is no limit on the number of accidents, just as long as the cost of repairs do not exceed the total cost of the laptop. Additionally, Safeware is equipped with one year of theft protection.

Learn more about the differences between Safeware and AppleCare+.

What is covered under Safeware?

  • Safeware coverage includes all mechanical and electrical breakdowns that the manufacturer covers, once the 1-year manufacturer’s warranty period has ended.
  • Safeware covers all power surges and AC adapter issues.
  • Accidental Damage Protection is included in all Safeware coverage. Vendor coverage, such as AppleCare, does not cover accidental damage. Accidental drops, spills, and cracked screens are all covered under Safeware!
  • Batteries are only covered due to accidental damage or corrosion, but are not covered due to excessive usage and natural consumption. However, consumed batteries that are diagnosed at the same time as another damage or failure claim will be repaired!

What is not covered under Safeware?

  • Anything under the manufacturer’s warranty, if the laptop is still under an active manufacturer warranty period (typically 1 year from date of purchase).
  • Software and virus issues.
  • Liquid damage and collisions in the event of a natural disaster, such as a flood or earthquake.
  • Intentional damage or destruction, such as neglect, misuse, vandalism, etc.

What if my laptop is stolen?

Because you own your laptop, the university is not responsible for replacing stolen laptops. Never leave your laptop unattended. We strongly encourage you to add your laptop to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance.

If your laptop is bundled with Safeware, you have 6 months or one year, depending on when you purchased, of theft protection. If your laptop is stolen within this time, you pay a $100 deposit and Safeware will completely replace your laptop without affecting your coverage for the next four years. You will, however, be required to submit a police report and pay a $100 deductible for each theft incident. This is the only circumstance in which you will be responsible for a deductible.

How do I get my WakeWare computer required when I am not on campus?

Call our Service Desk at (336) 758-4357 (HELP) for assistance. You may also call your laptop vendor’s support number found on their website.

Using your WakeWare laptop

Do I buy my own software, such as Microsoft Office?

No. All students may download all their academic software from software@WFU.

Can I install my own software on a WakeWare computer?

Yes.

How do I print?

You have access to printers located in the ZSR Library. While you are welcome to have your own printer, we recommend to wait and see if you need it. We do not allow wireless printers on our campus network, so have a USB cable for wired connection to your laptop.
