Congratulations on your status as a graduating student. As you prepare for graduation, we would like to provide you with computing information important for all Wake Forest graduates. All May 2013 graduates must take care of some very important tasks related to the ThinkPad. Follow the three steps below. This page will guide you through those tasks.  If you have questions concerning any of this information, please contact the Information Systems Service Desk by calling 758-HELP (x4357). STEP ONE - Back your data up!

No matter whether you are taking the ThinkPad with you or returning it to Wake Forest, it is important to back up your data onto an external hard drive or flash drive. Watch this helpful video about creating a backup of your important files. If you need help with backing up your data, please come to The Bridge.

STEP TWO - Take the ThinkPad to The Bridge on or before May 20th to:

1) Receive software for the ThinkPad to avoid the loss of functionality of the operating system and software applications on the ThinkPad after May 20th if you are taking the ThinkPad with you after graduation
2) Return the ThinkPad to Wake Forest University

All May 2013 graduates must take the ThinkPad to The Bridge during the following times:
  • Monday, May 6 through Wednesday, May 8 -- 10:00 am - 1:00 am
  • Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 -- 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17 -- 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

STEP ONE: Purchase the ThinkPad

If you have not already purchased the ThinkPad for $120 plus sales tax $8.10 ($128.10), go to the secure online web site to make your credit card payment. Ownership of the ThinkPad, together with the support and maintenance responsibilities, will transfer to you upon graduation on May 20, 2013. You must complete the purchase by May 20, 2013.

Lenovo warranty support, which varies by ThinkPad model, is provided by Lenovo for a limited time only. To see if the ThinkPad is still under warranty and/or covered by ThinkPad Protection, visit this Lenovo web site.

STEP TWO: Go to The Bridge to Obtain Legally Licensed Software

In order for you to use the ThinkPad after graduation, you must visit The Bridge between May 6-May 20, 2013 to obtain legally licensed software for your use after graduation.
Because you are purchasing the ThinkPad, you must obtain legally licensed software for the ThinkPad.  Failure to do so may result in the loss of functionality of the operating system and software, and the loss of your data after graduation.  This software can only be issued to you on or before May 20, 2013.  You must pick up the software at The Bridge.

Upon proof of purchase, Information Systems will provide to you the original operating system (Windows 7 Professional) and device drivers for the ThinkPad on a USB drive. You will also be provided with instructions to reimage the ThinkPad, as well as how to obtain Microsoft Office software. Due to software licensing restrictions no software originally provided on the ThinkPad standard load will transfer to you. Please let us know if you need our assistance with the set up of your ThinkPad.

STEP THREE: Install operating system and drivers and download Microsoft Office and other software for your ThinkPad

Follow these steps, in this order:
  1. Ensure that you have a current backup of your data.
  2. Use the instructions provided with the USB drive to install Windows 7 Professional (the operating system) and device drivers.
  3. Download your free, legal copy of Microsoft Office software. To get your copy of Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013, and other Microsoft applications, you must sign in at wfu.onthehub.com using your Wake Forest email address and password. IMPORTANT: Be sure to record the key by writing it down in a safe place or emailing it to your personal email. The key serves as proof of your right to run the software.
  4. Download free software that you might have used as a student. Here is a web page that helps you find the free software downloads.
  5. Protect yourself by purchasing licensed antivirus software such as Symantec AntiVirus or McAfee VirusScan. (Note: Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus software is licensed to Wake Forest, therefore it had to be removed during the reload process.) You may also download a free copy of Microsoft Security Essentials.
  6. Students can purchase Corel software products for their personal use on computers not owned by Wake Forest. Find out more here

STEP FOUR: Manage your Wake Forest account, email and data

  • Account Backups and Email Forwarding - As you prepare to leave Wake Forest, please review the information that you have stored in your computing accounts on the University’s servers. To aid in your transition to a permanent email provider, Wake Forest will continue to keep your student account active for 60 days after your graduation. At the end of that period, all accounts for Wake Forest graduates will be disabled. Learn more about the life cycle of your computing accounts, setting up an Alumni WIN account, and how to transition to a permanent email provider here
  • Move Your WFU Google Mail - Move your WFU Google Mail to a personal Google Mail account before your Wake Forest account expires.  Accounts for Wake Forest graduates will remain enabled for 60 days after graduation. Before the account is disabled, an email notification from help@wfu.edu will be sent to users to inform them that the account will be disabled.
  • Download Your Google Data - Download an archive of some of your Google data to your computer or an external hard drive by visiting this Google Web site before your Wake Forest account expires. Accounts for Wake Forest graduates will remain enabled for 60 days after graduation.
