Keeping up with Quotas

Due to very high mail use, Information Systems has implemented mailbox quotas. In order to keep your mailbox under the quota limit, you will need to regularly check your mailbox size on the server and delete old mail. Here are some instructions on managing your mail:

Taking Care of Your POP Mail (Putty & Thunderbird mail)

Checking your Mailbox Size:
A. Open the Start menu
B. Select Internet Tools
C. Choose Putty
D. A dialog box will appear, click on ac.wfu.edu
E. Click the Load button
F. At prompt enter your User Name
G. At prompt enter your Password
H. At the next prompt type in mailboxsize

If you have been downloading mail off of the server the message you will receive should look like this:

Your mail box is under 25 megs by about 26 megs.

Another way to check your Mailbox Size:
A. Open the Start menu
B. Select Internet Tools
C. Choose Putty
D. A dialog box will appear, click on ac.wfu.edu
E. Click the Load button
F. At prompt enter your User Name
G. At prompt enter your Password
H. At the prompt, type mquota -u and press Enter

The message should look like this:

 
             Disk quotas for user student (uid 101010): 
             Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace
             /var/spool/mail 556 12500 15000 1 0 0 
             /var/spool/poptmp 0 12500 15000 1 0 0 
             f1n11 %
             


As long as your blocks are less than the quota for the /var/spool/mail filesystem, then you are under quota. If the number of blocks is larger than quota, then follow the instructions for deleting messages off of the mail server.

Deleting Messages Off of the Mail Server:

Thunderbird:
Check your preferences screen and make sure it is deleting mail from the server each time mail is downloaded to your machine:

A.Go to the Tools menu.
B.Choose Account Settings
C.Click on Server Settings
D.Make sure the box for Leave messages on server is not checked.

Pine:
A. Open the Start menu
B. Select Internet Tools
C. Choose Putty
D. A dialog box will appear, click on ac.wfu.edu
E. Click the Load button
F. At prompt enter your User Name
G. At prompt enter your Password
H. At the prompt, type pine and press Enter
E. Press I for the folder index (inbox)

At this point, you may choose to delete all messages from the inbox, or select messages and delete them individually.

To delete all messages:
A. Press ; (semicolon) to select messages
B. Press A to select all messages
C. Press A again to apply
D. Press D to mark all messages for deletion
E. Press X to expunge the messages, then Y for Yes
F. Press Q to quit
G. At the prompt, type logout and close the Telnet window

To delete individual messages:
A. Scroll down through the list of messages and press D to select a message for deletion
B. Press X to expunge the messages, then Y for Yes.
C. Press Q to quit.
D. At the prompt, type logout and close the Telnet window
